Robert Huston Carnahan, a grain merchant before the war, was appointed captain of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry Regiment in August 1861, rising to lieutenant colonel in September 1864 and colonel by April 1865. After the war he worked as superintendent of a coal mine. He was born in 1823 and died in 1913.
