James Patton Brownlow, son of Tennessee Unionist governor William G. Brownlow, served as an officer of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) during the Civil War, fighting for the Union in his native East Tennessee. He was born in 1842 and died in 1879.
