Edward Hatch was a career soldier who rose to general in the Union Army during the Civil War, commanding cavalry in the Western Theater. After the war he became the first commander of the 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, one of the African American “Buffalo Soldier” regiments. He was born in Maine in 1832 and died in 1889.
