Edward “Allegheny” Johnson served as a Confederate general during the Civil War, highly regarded by Robert E. Lee and given command of a division under Richard S. Ewell. At the Battle of Gettysburg, he opted not to attack Culp’s Hill on the first evening despite a discretionary order to do so. He was born in 1816 and died in 1873.
