Charles Erasmus Fenner, a Louisiana lawyer, captained a battery during the Civil War. He later served as a justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1880 to 1893, where he wrote the court’s decision in the case that became the infamous U.S. Supreme Court ruling Plessy v. Ferguson. He was born in 1834 and died in 1911.
