Mark Perrin Lowrey, a Southern Baptist preacher known as the “Preacher General,” served as a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War. After the war he returned to the ministry, played a leading role in the Mississippi Southern Baptist Convention, and founded Blue Mountain College. He was born in 1828 and died in 1885.
