Lucius F. Hubbard enlisted as a private in 1861 and rose to Colonel of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, leading the regiment through the siege of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Nashville, where he commanded a brigade. Brevetted brigadier general in December 1864, he later fought at Fort Blakeley. After the war Hubbard became a businessman and served as Minnesota’s ninth governor from 1882 to 1887.
