Fielding Jackson Hurst, a surveyor, planter, and lawyer from McNairy County, Tennessee, served as a colonel in the Union Army, commanding the 6th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. A Southern Unionist and slaveholder, he later served in the Tennessee Senate and as a judge, and remains a controversial figure. He was born in 1810 and died in 1882.
