PARK DAY 2026: VOLUNTEERS HELP RESTORE SHY’S HILL AFTER HISTORIC ICE STORM
The tree canopy on Shy’s Hill is a little thinner after the January ice storm, but the hillside is returning to its pre-storm appearance after April 25, 2026, when the Battle of Nashville Trust and its volunteers descended on the slope as part of the 30th annual Park Day battlefield clean-up.
Thanks to volunteers including members of Scout Troop 418 from Brentwood and BONT board members led by President Bobby Whitson—substantial progress was made in restoring the historic grounds. Whitson expressed the Trust’s great appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Scout Troop members and their leaders for participating in this important task.
Working throughout the morning, the Scouts and other volunteers cleared downed branches and limbs and moved storm debris to the roadside for removal. Crews also focused on cutting back honeysuckle and other invasive growth, helping to reclaim sightlines and preserve the integrity of the battlefield landscape. Additional work improved portions of the trail system, making the site more accessible for visitors.
Park Day, now in its 30th year and held in partnership with the American Battlefield Trust, brings together volunteers at historic sites nationwide to care for and protect America’s battlefields. The Battle of Nashville Trust is grateful to all who participated in this year’s effort and helped ensure that Shy’s Hill remains a place of reflection, education, and remembrance.
