William R. Marshall

William Rainey Marshall commanded the 7th Minnesota Infantry as colonel during the 1862 Dakota War and the Civil War’s Price’s Missouri Expedition, taking over brigade command at the Battle of Nashville after Colonel Sylvester Hill was killed. He later led troops at Fort Blakeley during the Mobile campaign, earned a brevet brigadier generalship, and went on to serve as Minnesota’s fifth governor from 1866 to 1870.
