William H. Squires

William H. Squires helped raise Company K of the 26th Ohio Infantry in 1861 and was elected its first captain, later rising to major and then lieutenant colonel for gallant service. He commanded the regiment at the Battle of Stones River, helping hold the Union center, and served roughly four years despite advancing age. Squires developed chronic inflammatory rheumatism from his military service and died at his Madison County, Ohio home in January 1870.
