William Grose was a Union brigadier general from Indiana who raised and commanded the 36th Indiana Infantry before leading a brigade in the Army of the Cumberland’s IV Corps. He fought at Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and the Atlanta and Franklin-Nashville campaigns, earning a reputation for courage under fire. Wounded twice, with two horses shot from under him, he survived the war and later served as a revenue collector and state senator.
