William D. Whipple

William D. Whipple served as a Union Brigadier General, brevetted major general, and spent much of the war as chief of staff to Major General George H. Thomas in the Army of the Cumberland. He was present at First Bull Run, Missionary Ridge, the Chattanooga Campaign, and the Atlanta Campaign. Whipple survived the war, remained in the Army until retiring in 1890, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
