Washington Lafayette Elliott was a Union brigadier general and career cavalry officer who led the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and later commanded cavalry forces in the Army of Virginia and a division of IV Corps at the Battle of Nashville. He fought at Wilson’s Creek, Island No. 10, Corinth, and was wounded at Second Bull Run. He survived the war, remained in the Regular Army until retiring in 1879, and became a San Francisco banker.
