Thomas J. Wood served as a Union Major General commanding a division in the IV Corps, Army of the Cumberland. He fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Missionary Ridge, and his controversial withdrawal of a division at Chickamauga opened a gap that Confederate forces exploited. Wood survived the war, retired in 1868 due to his wounds, and settled in Dayton, Ohio, remaining active in veterans’ organizations until his death in 1906.
