Sylvester G. Hill commanded the 35th Iowa Infantry as colonel, leading troops at the Siege of Vicksburg, the Red River Campaign battles of Pleasant Hill and Yellow Bayou (where he was wounded), and the Battle of Tupelo. Commanding a brigade at the Battle of Nashville, he was killed instantly by Confederate artillery fire on December 15, 1864. He was posthumously confirmed as a brevet brigadier general.
