Nathan Kimball served as a Union Brigadier General, later brevetted major general, commanding the ‘Gibraltar Brigade’ and later divisions in the Army of the Potomac and Western Theater. He fought at Cheat Mountain, First Kernstown, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, and the Atlanta and Franklin-Nashville campaigns. Kimball survived the war, serving postwar as Indiana State Treasurer, a state legislator, and later as federal surveyor general and postmaster in Ogden, Utah, where he died in 1898.
