Joseph G. Hawkins served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He led the regiment’s charge at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, where his men helped capture three enemy artillery pieces. At the Battle of Stones River on December 31, 1862, Hawkins was mortally wounded while urging his soldiers to hold their position and later died of his wounds.
