John Stephen Casement commanded the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later led a brigade in the XXIII Corps, fighting at Kessler’s Cross Lanes, Kernstown, the Siege of Knoxville, the Atlanta Campaign, and the Battle of Franklin. Breveted brigadier general, he survived the war to become a prominent railroad contractor, directing construction of the Union Pacific’s section of the Transcontinental Railroad and earning the nickname “General Jack” among his crews.
