John Quincy Lane, a Zanesville, Ohio attorney, organized and commanded the 97th Ohio Infantry from September 1862, leading it through the Perryville, Stones River, Tullahoma, and Chattanooga campaigns. By the 1864 Atlanta and Franklin-Nashville campaigns he commanded a brigade in Wagner’s division, IV Corps; his brigade was overrun in the disastrous advanced line at the Battle of Franklin. Brevetted brigadier general in March 1865, he returned to practicing law in Zanesville.
