John M. Schofield was a Union major general who commanded the Army of the Ohio during the Atlanta Campaign and fought at the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville in 1864, later assisting Sherman’s operations in the Carolinas. Earlier in the war he earned the Medal of Honor for gallantry at Wilson’s Creek. He survived the war and later served as U.S. Secretary of War and as Commanding General of the U.S. Army.
