Brigadier General James L. Donaldson served as Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Cumberland and later the Military Division of Tennessee, organizing the massive supply and transportation network that sustained Grant’s, Sherman’s, and Thomas’s armies. He also organized quartermaster personnel into combat units and took part in the Battle of Nashville. Brevetted major general, he survived the war, retired from active service in 1869, and later wrote a book on the Second Seminole War.
