James I. Gilbert

Colonel James I. Gilbert commanded the 27th Iowa Infantry Regiment and later a brigade in the XVI Corps, Army of the Tennessee. He fought in the Red River Campaign, was wounded at Pleasant Hill, and led troops at Tupelo, Nashville, and the capture of Fort Blakeley. Promoted to brigadier general in February 1865 and later brevetted major general, he afterward worked in lumber and mining before settling in Kansas.
