Brevet Major General James H. Wilson led the Cavalry Corps of the Military Division of the Mississippi, fighting at Corinth, South Mountain, Antietam, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga before commanding a division under Sheridan. He directed Wilson’s Raid through Alabama and Georgia in 1865, capturing Selma. He survived the war, worked as a railroad engineer, and returned to duty in the Spanish-American War and Boxer Rebellion, dying in 1925 as one of the last Union generals.
