James A. Sexton

James A. Sexton served in the Union Army during the Civil War before becoming a prominent Chicago businessman and Republican politician. He was appointed Postmaster of Chicago from 1889 to 1893, and in 1898 was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, the national Union veterans’ organization, a post he held until his death in 1899. He was born in 1844.
