Jacob D. Cox

Jacob D. Cox rose from brigadier general to major general, commanding the Kanawha Division in western Virginia and later the 3rd Division of the XXIII Corps under John Schofield. He fought at Scary Creek, South Mountain, and Antietam, then served through the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, and the Carolinas Campaign. He survived the war unwounded and went on to a prominent postwar career as Governor of Ohio, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and congressman.
