Isaac R. Sherwood served in the 14th Ohio Infantry before becoming lieutenant colonel of the 111th Ohio Infantry Regiment, which he commanded at the Battle of Nashville. He was later brevetted brigadier general for conspicuous service. After the war Sherwood had a long political career in Congress, where decades later he became known as an outspoken pacifist who opposed U.S. entry into World War I and the military draft.
