George Hicks is tentatively identified with George Augustus Hicks of Brooklyn, New York, who served in the 3rd Battalion Massachusetts Rifles and the 15th Massachusetts Infantry before becoming an Assistant Adjutant-General and reaching the rank of major. He saw action at Ball’s Bluff, the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Gettysburg, Knoxville, and Petersburg, and was present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. He died in 1894 in Jamaica, New York.
