George H. Thomas

George H. Thomas served as a Union Major General and commander of the Army of the Cumberland during the Civil War. Known as the ‘Rock of Chickamauga’ for holding the line in 1863, he also won the first major Union victory at Mill Springs and delivered a decisive defeat to Confederate forces under John Bell Hood at Nashville in 1864. Thomas survived the war and died of a stroke in San Francisco in 1870.
