Frederick Knefler

Frederick Knefler, a Hungarian-born immigrant, rose from private to colonel of the 79th Indiana Infantry, which he organized in 1862. He fought at Shiloh, Stones River, and Chickamauga, and led a celebrated charge at Missionary Ridge, later commanding a full brigade through the Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville campaigns while still holding colonel’s rank. Brevetted brigadier general in 1865, he practiced law in Indianapolis and helped oversee the city’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
