Edward Clifford Anderson, a former U.S. Navy officer, served as a colonel in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, commanding Fort James Jackson near Savannah, Georgia, until its capture in 1864. He was elected mayor of Savannah eight times both before and after the war, becoming the city’s first postwar mayor in December 1865. He was born in 1815 and died in 1883.
