David S. Stanley served as a Union Major General commanding the IV Corps during the Civil War, fighting at Wilson’s Creek, Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, and the Atlanta Campaign. At the Battle of Franklin in 1864 he led a counterattack that helped save part of a Union division from destruction, earning him the Medal of Honor in 1893. Stanley survived the war, commanded the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition, and retired from the Army in 1892.
