Darius N. Couch

Darius N. Couch rose from colonel of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry to major general commanding the II Corps, Army of the Potomac. He fought through the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, then led the Department of the Susquehanna during the Gettysburg Campaign. Plagued by poor health, he survived the war unwounded, unsuccessfully ran for Massachusetts governor, and later served as Connecticut’s adjutant general before his 1897 death.
