Charles M. Hammond served with the 100th Illinois Infantry, rising from major to lieutenant colonel. Organized at Joliet in 1862, the regiment fought at Bardstown, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge as part of Sheridan’s/Wagner’s division, then through the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, and Nashville, suffering over 200 dead. Hammond survived these engagements and mustered out with his regiment in June 1865; no record of him being wounded has been found.
