Charles H. De Groat served as colonel of the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, leading the regiment through the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and the Carolinas Campaign. For his service he was nominated and confirmed for the brevet rank of brigadier general in 1866. Born in Cortland, New York, he later settled in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he died in 1904.
