Bernard F. Mullen

Colonel Bernard F. Mullen, an Irish-born physician who had served as a surgeon in the Mexican-American War, commanded the 35th Indiana Infantry Regiment (“1st Irish”). He was wounded through the right thigh at the Battle of Stones River but continued leading his men, later fighting at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge during the Chattanooga Campaign. Mullen survived the war, was active in the Fenian Brotherhood, and died of consumption in Indianapolis in 1879.
