Benjamin Harrison commanded the 70th Indiana Infantry Regiment as colonel during the Civil War, rising to brevet brigadier general and fighting in the Atlanta Campaign under William T. Sherman. A grandson of President William Henry Harrison, he practiced law in Indianapolis after the war, served as a U.S. Senator from Indiana, and was elected the 23rd President of the United States in 1888, serving from 1889 to 1893.
