Benjamin Franklin Cheatham was a Confederate general who served throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee, inflicting heavy casualties on Sherman’s forces at Kennesaw Mountain in 1864. He was widely blamed for allowing Union General Schofield’s army to escape at Spring Hill, a lapse that contributed to the Confederate defeat at Franklin. After the war he worked as a gold miner and planter. He was born in 1820 and died in 1886.
