Axel H. Silfversparre, a Swedish immigrant, organized and commanded an independent Illinois light artillery battery known as “Silfversparre’s Battery,” composed largely of Swedish and German volunteers, mustering in as captain in February 1862. The battery fought at the Battle of Shiloh and in the capture of Corinth, Mississippi. Silfversparre survived two courts-martial before being relieved of command by order of General Sherman and resigning in February 1863. He died in Illinois in 1906.
