Andrew J. Smith, a career cavalry officer, rose to major general commanding infantry divisions in the Western Theater. He fought at Chickasaw Bayou and Arkansas Post, and during the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns, winning his most noted victory over Confederate forces at Tupelo in 1864 before helping secure victory at Nashville. He survived the war unwounded, later commanded the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, and retired in 1869 to serve as postmaster of St. Louis.
