Abel D. Streight commanded the 51st Indiana Infantry and in April 1863 led roughly 1,700 mule-mounted troops on a raid to cut Confederate rail supply lines in Alabama and Georgia. After winning the Battle of Day’s Gap, his exhausted force was run down and surrounded by Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry and surrendered at Cedar Bluff. Imprisoned at Libby Prison, Streight tunneled his way to freedom in February 1864 and later became an Indiana state senator.
