The August edition of the Battle of Nashville Trust Bulletin features President Brad Gericke's discussion of the Trust's newly revised mission statement, along with information about the August meeting of the Nashville Civil War Roundtable and an article examining the important role of women who cared for Civil War soldiers in Nashville.

In his President's Message, President Gericke explains three important elements of the Trust's new mission: protecting the memories, land, structures, and artifacts associated with the Campaign and Battle of Nashville; honoring the history of all who fought and lived through the Civil War in Tennessee; and pursuing the three principal functions of preservation, education, and advocacy. He notes that the Trust's vision extends beyond battlefield land to include artifacts, documents, photographs, and structures that can help preserve and interpret the full story of the Battle and its participants. He also introduces the Trust's new "Campaign Order," which establishes benchmarks for moving its preservation, education, and advocacy efforts forward.

The Bulletin also announces the August 18 meeting of the Nashville Civil War Roundtable, featuring BONT Vice President and Vanderbilt professor Brandon Hulette presenting "What Lies Beneath: The Battle of Nashville." The program will examine physical remnants of the Battle and Hood's final campaign and explore new scientific and technological methods that can help historians understand what lies beneath historic battlefields.

The month's featured article, "Caring For the Sick and Wounded at Nashville" by Howard Mann, focuses on the women who served as surgeons and nurses during the Civil War and shares stories of the courage and resilience of those who cared for the sick and wounded.
