BONT BOARD MEMBER BRANDON HULETTE TO TEACH OLLI COURSE ON CIVIL WAR HOSPITALS OF NASHVILLE

Battle of Nashville Trust board member and VU professor Brandon Hulette will teach an upcoming course for Vanderbilt University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) during the Winter 2026 term. The course, “The Civil War Hospitals of Nashville,” draws on Hulette’s original research and explores a little-known but critically important chapter in Nashville’s Civil War history.

During the war, Nashville became one of the largest hospital centers in the United States, with more than 25 military hospitals established across the city. The course examines how these facilities operated and highlights medical innovations that emerged during this period, including early antiseptic practices and some of the nation’s first specialty hospitals. See attached photo showing the former Hardin Perkins Bostick Home, which was used as Hospital No. 10. It saw the most communicable diseases and was known as “the Pest House.”

The class will meet Mondays, January 12 through February 23, 2026 (no class on January 19), from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. CT, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Pike. OLLI at Vanderbilt is a continuing education program designed for adults 50 and older, offering non-credit courses taught by Vanderbilt faculty and community scholars. Participation requires a paid OLLI membership, and individual courses may carry an additional fee.
